Wicked (Touring)
Appearing in: boston
Wicked opened on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003 and has been running, somewhere in the world, virtually every night since. Based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical retells the story of Oz from the perspective of Elphaba — the green-skinned girl who will become the Wicked Witch — and her friendship with Glinda the Good. Composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, whose earlier credits include Godspell and Pippin, wrote a score that balances big theatrical belting numbers with more intimate character moments, and the result is a musical that works for audiences of almost any age or level of familiarity with musical theater.
The show's two signature numbers — "Defying Gravity" at the end of Act One, and "For Good" in Act Two — have become standards of the musical theater repertoire, performed at high school graduations, auditions, and talent competitions worldwide. "The Wizard and I" and "Popular" have similarly transcended the show itself to become songs that audiences know before they've ever bought a ticket. The production's visual and technical ambition is equally celebrated: the flying sequences, the costume and set design, and the sheer spectacle of the final act make it one of the most impressive productions on any touring circuit.
The touring production matches the Broadway version in production values, bringing the full show to audiences across North America who may be seeing it for the first time or returning for a fifth. The 2024 film adaptation starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande has introduced Wicked to an entirely new generation of potential theatergoers, and the 2026 touring run benefits directly from that renewed cultural visibility.
