The Funeral Portrait
Appearing in: houston, austin-san-antonio
The Funeral Portrait formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 2014 and developed a sound their own frontman Lee Jennings describes as sitting somewhere between My Chemical Romance, Ghost, and Motionless in White — which is an accurate enough description of music that combines emotional hardcore intensity with theatrical presentation and a genuine flair for melody. The band's debut EP For the Dearly Departed (2014) and full-length A Moment of Silence (2016) established their artistic identity before they signed to Better Noise Music, the label that would bring them mainstream rock radio success.
That success arrived in force with their 2024 album Greetings from Suffocate City, which produced three consecutive Billboard Mainstream Rock number-one singles: "Dark Thoughts" (featuring Danny Worsnop), "Suffocate City" (featuring Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills), and "Holy Water" (featuring Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch). Three consecutive number ones from a debut major-label cycle is a genuinely exceptional achievement by any standard, and it reflects both the quality of Jennings' songwriting and the band's ability to attract collaborators who recognize that quality. Their live shows — theatrical events the band calls "Devotion Ceremonies," built around visual iconography and elaborately designed characters — are known for the fierce loyalty they generate from the Coffin Crew, their fanbase, who turn out ready to participate.
