Moulin Rouge! The Musical (Touring)

Appearing in: houston, boston

Moulin Rouge! The Musical opened on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2018 after a world premiere in Boston, and proceeded to win ten Tony Awards including Best Musical — one of the strongest award showings for a new musical in recent memory. Adapted from Baz Luhrmann's visually extravagant 2001 film of the same name, the stage musical takes the film's central storytelling device — a narrative driven by contemporary pop songs rather than original compositions — and expands it dramatically, weaving together dozens of recognizable songs spanning decades of popular music history into a story set in the hedonistic Paris nightclub scene of 1899.

The show's lead characters — the aspiring writer Christian and the courtesan Satine — move through a plot built around love, class, consumption, and tragedy, but the emotional weight is consistently undercut and amplified in equal measure by the parade of familiar songs that soundtrack it. Hearing "Roxanne" transformed into a tango, or recognizing the opening bars of a song you know before it takes an unexpected turn into something from a completely different era, is part of what makes the experience distinctively theatrical rather than simply nostalgic. The sets and costumes are among the most lavish in touring theater, and the production values in the touring version match what Broadway audiences experienced when the show was new.
