La Roux formed in London in 2006 as the collaboration between vocalist and visual focus Elly Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid. Their 2009 self-titled debut arrived precisely when a wave of artists were revisiting 1980s synthesizer aesthetics, but La Roux distinguished themselves through Jackson's unusually angular, forceful vocal delivery and Langmaid's production choices — cold, precise, and rhythmically propulsive in ways that owed more to new wave than to the warmer retro-funk that dominated adjacent releases. "Bulletproof" became an international hit and won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2010.

The duo released their second album Trouble in Paradise in 2014, which expanded their palette while maintaining the cool, synthetic precision that made their debut memorable. Jackson has continued recording and performing as La Roux in subsequent years, and joining Hilary Duff on the Lucky Me Tour positions the act alongside another artist whose music occupies a specific moment in early 2000s and late 2000s pop history — two sets of songs that audiences who were teenagers in that era will feel immediately and viscerally.
