I Am the Avalanche formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2009, led by Vinnie Caruana, who had previously been the vocalist for The Movielife — a Long Island post-hardcore band with its own fiercely loyal following. The transition preserved what made Caruana a compelling frontman while giving him a new musical vehicle: thick, layered guitar work from Mike Ireland, emotionally exposed lyrics, and the kind of chest-forward delivery that makes a mid-sized venue feel intimate. Their 2011 self-titled debut and 2014's Wolverines established them as one of the more reliable names in the genre, and subsequent releases have deepened rather than diluted that reputation. Joining the Yellowcard-headlined Up Up Down Down Tour slots them into the exact lineage their music draws from.
