Dave Matthews Band
Appearing in: boston
Dave Matthews Band came together in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1991 when South African-born singer and guitarist Dave Matthews gathered a group of local musicians for what was initially just a demo recording session. That casual assembly — Matthews alongside drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist LeRoi Moore (who passed away in 2008), bassist Stefan Lessard, and violinist Boyd Tinsley — quickly became one of the most distinctive-sounding bands of the 1990s, combining acoustic and electric instrumentation with jazz-influenced improvisation in ways the mainstream rock world hadn't heard before.
The band built their initial following through relentless touring of the college circuit, self-releasing their debut album Remember Two Things in 1993 before signing to RCA and releasing the widely celebrated Under the Table and Dreaming in 1994. That album, propelled by the singles "What Would You Say" and "Ants Marching," pushed past platinum many times over and established the band as a mainstream force while preserving the jam-centric identity that made them beloved by live music audiences. Crash (1996), Before These Crowded Streets (1998), and Everyday (2001) continued their commercial ascent. Their live album Live at Red Rocks 8.15.95 is widely regarded as one of the finest live recordings in rock history.
The loss of LeRoi Moore in 2008 was a profound moment for the band and their fanbase, but DMB continued, eventually bringing in saxophonist Jeff Coffin as a permanent member. The group has released several more studio albums since, including Away from the World (2012) and Come Tomorrow (2018), the latter becoming their seventh consecutive number-one debut on the Billboard 200 — a record no other band has matched.
At the center of every DMB concert is the promise of surprise. No two setlists are alike; deep cuts surface alongside radio favorites, jams extend and evolve in real time, and the interplay between the musicians — some of whom have been playing together for over thirty years — remains genuinely thrilling. Their annual summer tours regularly sell out amphitheaters and outdoor venues across North America, drawing multi-generational crowds who return year after year for an experience that simply cannot be replicated on a recording.
