Coheed and Cambria formed in Nyack, New York in 1995 and have spent the following three decades building and expanding a narrative universe that would be ambitious for a novelist, let alone a rock band. Every album they have released is part of The Amory Wars, a science-fiction saga involving a war between two planets, a family at its center, and mythology that extends into comic books, novelizations, and an ongoing narrative that vocalist and primary songwriter Claudio Sanchez has been developing for over twenty years. The concept album format, largely abandoned by rock after the 1970s prog era, has been reclaimed and evolved by Coheed into something with a genuinely contemporary fan community around it.
The music itself — often described as post-hardcore or progressive rock, though neither label captures the full range — combines heavy, technical guitar work with Sanchez's unusually high, melodically complex vocal delivery and arrangements that move through multiple distinct sections within single songs. Albums like In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (2003), Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005), and No World for Tomorrow (2007) are considered progressive rock landmarks, and the band's subsequent work has continued to develop the sound and the story simultaneously. Their live shows draw devoted audiences who know the lore as well as the music, and that community is one of the more unusual things in American rock.
