Beartooth began as the solo project of Caleb Shomo, a former member of Attack Attack!, who wrote, recorded, and produced the debut EP Sick (2013) entirely himself while dealing with severe anxiety and depression. The music was a direct expression of those experiences — loud, aggressive, and emotionally unfiltered in a way that immediately connected with listeners who recognized something real in it. The debut full-length Disgusting (2014) expanded the project into a full band, and its commercial and critical success established Beartooth as one of the most important acts in metalcore's early 2010s resurgence.

Shomo's self-sufficiency as a producer and songwriter — he has recorded most of Beartooth's catalog himself — gives their records a sonic consistency and directness that distinguishes them from more commercially produced metalcore. Albums including Aggressive (2016), Disease (2018), and Below (2021) have each debuted at number one on the Billboard Hard Rock albums chart and maintained their standing as a touring headliner across the United States, Europe, and Australia. Their live shows are known for Shomo's intense performance and the genuine crowd participation that anthems like "Hated" and "In Between" reliably generate.
