BABYMETAL formed in Tokyo in 2010 as a sub-unit of the Japanese idol group Sakura Gakuin, conceived by producer Key Kobayashi as an experiment in combining kawaii idol aesthetics with heavy metal. What began as a novelty evolved into something more interesting: the project attracted elite metal session musicians (collectively known as the Kami Band) who took the musical execution entirely seriously, and the result was records that worked as genuine heavy metal while maintaining the idol presentation that made them visually and conceptually unprecedented. Their 2014 self-titled international debut and 2016 follow-up Metal Resistance brought them to global audiences who had no precedent for what they were experiencing.

Their live performances — elaborate theatrical productions with choreography, lighting, and pyrotechnics — have been staged at venues including Wembley Arena and Madison Square Garden, and they have headlined and appeared at major metal festivals worldwide including Download and Rock on the Range. The response from traditional metal audiences, who might be expected to resist the idol pop context, has been largely positive: the music is unambiguously heavy, and the performance quality from both the vocalists and the Kami Band is excellent. The 2026 World Tour with Halestorm continues their pattern of touring alongside established Western rock and metal acts, deepening their credibility in the North American market.
